Ma'ukele Lodge

An oceanfront retreat on the lava coast of Puna, Hawai'i

Aloha - welcome

A quiet corner of Hawai'i, kept as it was meant to be

Ma'ukele Lodge is an owner-occupied bed and breakfast on the slopes of Kīlauea, nestled between rainforest, black lava, black sand and the turquoise Pacific. This is not a resort - it is a home, opened to travellers who prefer birdsong to lobby music and the smell of frangipani to chlorine. Guests wake to fresh tropical fruit on the wrap-around lanai, watch the sun rise over the ocean and fall asleep to the chorus of coqui frogs.

The lodge

A sixty-year-old beach house on a living coastline

The house is a cross between a bohemian cottage and an eclectic Hawaiian beach retreat, wearing the softened marks of lava flows and tropical storms with pride. Interiors are open and unfussy, arranged so the eye is always drawn to the view - forest, garden, lava field, ocean. Two accommodations share the property: the sprawling Family Suite with private garden, outdoor claw-foot tub and outdoor shower, and the intimate King Room upstairs with partial ocean view, tiled bathroom and air-conditioning. Hosts Raven and Mark live on site and know the island the way only lifelong locals can.

Facilities

Everything you need, nothing you don't

The property is entirely non-smoking, hypoallergenic and equipped with smoke alarms, fire extinguishers and 24-hour security.

Lava coastline and Pacific ocean
The experience

Slow mornings, wild afternoons, star-heavy nights

A path from the garden leads over cooled lava to the Pacific, where waves break turquoise onto black sand. Two and a half kilometres up the coast is Kehena beach for swimming; Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, thermal ponds, farmers' markets and the town of Pāhoa are all within easy reach by car. Return each evening to the lanai, a cold drink and the sound of the ocean.
